Cops in Oklahoma shot and wounded a barefoot gunman on Wednesday who wandered into a downtown courthouse plaza, opened fire, and later exchanged gunfire with police, wounding a deputy and a bystander.

Tulsa police don't know what prompted Andrew Joseph Dennehy, 23, to stroll into the plaza, clad in just jean shorts and a t-shirt, and begin firing shots into the air near a gazebo between the Tulsa County courthouse and a library at around 2:30 p.m.

Bystanders frantically ran as the shots rang out, and courthouse deputies quickly swarmed the plaza and exchanged fire with Dennehy after he aimed his weapon at them, the Tulsa World reported.

Dennehy was hit in the upper body, while a deputy was shot in both hands and both arms.

It's not clear who fired the shots that hit the bystander, authorities said.

All three were taken to local hospitals, where the bystander was reported in critical condition.

The shooter and the deputy's wounds were not life-threatening, officials said. One woman was treated for injuries at the scene and released, authorities aid.

John Fancher, a communications specialist at the regional library, said he started snapping pictures from the building after hearing the first bursts of gunfire.

"[People] were scattering, trying to get in the courthouse as quickly as they could," Fancher told the World.

"I start snapping off some shots, and he sits down, just casually sits down, gun in his hand and three sheriff's come out of the courthouse," he added.

Dennehy was in police custody after the shooting, but hadn't been formally charged.

According to local reports, the young Tulsa native had a violent past with a rap sheet that included busts for drunk driving, weapons possession and drug possession.

In 2005, his brother, Brian, was shot and killed by Tulsa Police at an apartment complex after beating his grandfather to death, local radio station KRMG reported.
