Sanit worker Ed Shevlin named Irish person of the year by the Council of the city

Ed Shevlin "Shevy, city sanitation worker made headlines when he won a scholarship from the Irish Fulbright Commission last year, is set to be honored as an Irish person of the year by the Council of the city.

Shevlin, working from a Queens East 14 drainage, promises not to let his head.

"I'm still behind the truck every day, singing an Irish melody and even Ireland, speaking with some of the people who live on the route," said Shevlin, 51.

Shevlin, who also serves as Secretary to the society of recording DSNY Emerald, has spent years working on issues related to immigration and its programs.

He played in the Emerald society pipe band DSNY and drum and rode the motorcycle Harley Davidson throughout the country to raise funds for cystic fibrosis research.

He devoted himself to learning Gaeilge, one of the four Gaelic languages.

But the rise was from high school through to scholar who caught the attention of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and her staff.

Asked to say the Shevlin history as part of the program to get more variations to resume their education.

On 27 March, he will be named Thomas Manton Irish person of the year during the Council of Irish heritage and culture Celebration at the historical society of New York.

In the crowd with is his mother, Margie, who, from the city of Cork, and saw his father, Eddie, the daughter of Scottish immigrants in Latin America.

"It is almost surreal," said Shevlin. "You don't expect something to come your way. I am, after all, a New York City garbageman and an undergrad at one of the local colleges. "

Shevlin will share the platform with the evening of MSNBC Chris Matthews and Sheila Lynott-Hourican, President of the Irish Association of undertakings.

He said that the message that they are trying to convey is about pride — for children in Ireland and other countries.

"We should be proud that we are from where we come from," he said. "We should all be doing a service item for the people of this city.

"We are all children of immigrants or grandchildren of immigrants," he continued. "This country was good to all of us and must bring that with us all the time."

Womens history month celebration

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and policewomen of endowment Association hosted a women's history month celebration at 1 police Plaza 21 March at 18.00.

The ceremony will focus on women of the NYPD who served in the United States military.

Admiral Linda Fagan, field Commander of the United States Coast Guard operations is keynote speaker.
